Dieter Heitkamp

Dieter Heitkamp studied Physical Education and Biology at the Free University and Visual Arts at the University of Arts in Berlin. In 1977 he started his dance education with Contact Improvisation (CI), followed by studies in modern and contemporary dance, release and alignment oriented techniques as well as Body-Mind Centering.

Since over 30 years he has been involved intensively with studying, teaching and performing CI. Many of his writings and lectures can be found on

From 1978 until 1998 he has been a collective member of Tanzfabrik Berlin and choreographed over 18 evening long pieces for Tanzfabrik that have been presented  throughout Germany, 15 european countries, Canada, the US, Japan, Hongkong and Brazil.

He also worked as guestchoreographer for Ballett Frankfurt, has created choreographies for theatre productions and for Video and TV. In 1997 he choreographed and designed the set for „Le Disperazioni del Signor Pulcinella“, a ballet by Hans Werner Henze, for the stateopera Unter den Linden, Berlin.

Regarding the politics of dancing – He was a founding member of the German Forum for Contemporary Dance in the 90ies, is a member of ITI Germany and ID_Frankfurt/ and worked as curator for Tanzplan Deutschland, Fonds Darstellende Künste and Kunststiftung NRW.

Since 2001 he works as a professor for contemporary dance at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt a.M., is Director of the Department for Contemporary and Classical Dance  and since 2006 a member of the board of directors of Tanzlabor_21.
